I'm back from a great trip to Berlin where I soaked up all the good things in life, sun, coffee, wine, pottery shopping and cycling with a long time friend and my eldest daughter. My friend who knows Berlin inside out, brought me to Golem, a ceramic tile producer in Hackesche Hofe who specialise in producing tiles for architectural preservation work. They have the most amazing range of work and I happily browsed their extensive tile collection from art deco designs to work contemporary 'guest' commissions from selected German artists. I learnt that the company employs 63 people and their famous art deco tiles are all coloured by hand by 3 artisans who specialise in this work. No short cuts are taken in their production from the intricately moulded tiles, to painstakingly filling metal patterns with slip inlay to produce their historical floor tiles. The glaze formulas they use are based on original formulas from the 1800 and 1900 's minus the harmful chemicals!
Wandering around the inner court yards of the Hackesche Hofe you can see their work in situ - Golem have reproduced and supplied all the tiles in this beautiful series of indoor courtyards. A must see for tile lovers...
