Sgraffito is a term used to describe handcarving pattern or images into soft clay. I have named my new range after this technique and love working with the clay like this. The pot is made using 1.6 kilograms of stoneware clay and takes over 3 weeks to make. I throw the pot on my small potter's wheel and leave it to dry out slightly. When strong enough to handle, I trim the base and band rich colours onto the outside of the bowl with an extra wide brush. Next I etch the pattern into the rim of the bowl with a potter's knife. A week left to dry in a hot studio and then it goes into the kiln for the first firing, called the biscuit firing. Glazing comes next using a transparent stoneware glaze and then it's back into the kiln for it's final firing at a temperature of 1200 degrees celsius.
The result is a unique, handcrafted bowl with a timeless design, to enjoy and use in your home for many years.
12 cms high by 23 cms wide approx.
This pot is dishwasher and microwave proof but as with all handmade pottery I recommend hand washing - it's very special after all!!
